FC Merivälja – Eyjafjallajökull

Tough match today against league favorites Eyjafjallajökull ended with second win in a row for FC Merivälja, who is now leading the league table, as the only team with maximum points after two rounds.

FC Merivälja played almost perfect first halftime: disciplined in defense and creative in attack. We had 3-4 good scoring opportunities, while we didn’t leave much space for shots on the other end. Halftime lead came after Metsmaa intercepted the ball in the middle and took couple of shots towards the goal, which were saved by opposite goalie back into the field, where he managed to pass to Sedrik, who then took another shot from about six meters. Jakubov picked up the deflection and brilliantly passed to Metsmaa for the first goal.

In the beginning of second halftime we increased our lead after Botnaru found Kuusk with a nice long pass to opposite penalty box, where he was tackled by opponent. Makarov didn’t hesitate to punish this tackle with penalty kick. Kuusk took the penalty himself and confidently increased our lead to 2:0.

Just a minute after we played a schoolbook corner kick, where Sedrik found unmarked Reiman, who increased our lead with an attractive powerful shot to opposite top corner for 3:0.

After that FC Merivälja was controlling the match, although opponents managed to create few chances in that period, but Botnaru was always in place to save those shots.

Three minutes before the end Eyjafjallajökull took the timeout and it was clear, that they will try to use flying goalkeeper as they had nothing to lose at that point. Instead of punishing them with the fourth goal, we lost the ball in attacking half and allow them quick counter attack, where finally Listov lowered the score to 3:1. With just over a minute to go Eyjafjallajökull intercepted the ball from our side out kick and executed another quick counter for 3:2, just before they ran out of time.

Excellent performance by entire team today and deserved win over a skilled opponent. Next week we’re up against ambitious and still undefeated team of TJK Legion, which promises to be another good match.
